19.11.4 a não ser que unless

The subordinate clause introduced by a não ser que (unless) describes a necessary condition. (He won't pass the exam unless he studies more.) It describes a hypothecial event / action and requires therefore the conjunctive. The sequence of tenses is to be respected, see Kapitel 12.

before: I don't allow it, unless he has finished.
at the same time: I don't allow it, unless he finishes.
afterwards: I don't allow it, unless he will finish.

Vou sair, a não ser que chova.
I go out, unless it rains.
Não pretende mudar de clube, a não ser que a proposta seja mesmo muito boa..
He doesn't have the intention to change the club, unless there is a very good offer.
Não conte seus problemas a outras pessoas a não ser que elas queiram ouvi-los.
Don't tell your problems to other people, unless they want to hear them.
Ele não lutava a não ser que fosse para proteger alguém que amasse.
He never fought, unless he wanted to protect someone he loved.

The rule that applies in general, is valid as well here. If the subordinate clause is shortened with an infinitivo or is simply a noun, the que is left out. In this case the sentence has to be restructured if translated to English, because unless is a conjunction and there is no equivalent preposition.

Ninguém fará nada pelo povo, a não ser o próprio povo.
Nobody but the people itself will do something for the people.
Não existe solução a não ser a negociação.
There is no solution but a compromise.
Empresas não têm outra opção a não ser cooperar.
There is no solution except a compromise.
