24. numbers

There a lot of numbers.

cardinal numbers: Cardinal numbers describe the amount of a homogenous mass, three kilos of chocolate, or the amount of elements of something, three cars. What we use in math lesson are cardinal numbers.

ordinal numbers: Ordinal numbers describe the position of an element in an ordner. The third floor is above the second floor and below the forth floor. They don't describe either the amount of a mass nor the amount of elements.

fraction numbers: Describe the part of an imagined whole. The whole of a quarter are for quarters, the whole of a fifth are five fifth and two fifth are less than a half.

percentages: Percentages are the part of a whole normalized to 100. This normalization is needed to compare something. If five millions of costaricans have a smartphone and 70 millions of italians one could believe that italians have much more smartphones than costaricans. However if we normalize the number to 100 by owners of a smartphone / the whole population * 100 we will see that the relationship of owners of a smartphone / not owners of as smartphone is more or less the same in both countries.

24.1 Kardinalzahlen

The formation of the numbers is a little bit tricky, at least in reality. The following rules are obviously completely useless, nobody can learn that by heart. However if we learn by heart one big number cento e cinquenta e sete mil we will form the other numbers correctly.


1) The millions and the thousands are never connected by e (and). The thousands follows the millions without any connection, (1).

2) The thousands connects the hundreds WITHOUT e, IF the hundred(s) are followed by a tens, 2, by a unit, 9, or bei both, 6.

3) If the thousand(s) is (are) follower by a full hundred(s), no tens / units, it is connected with e, 10

4) The hundreds and the tens are always, whether there is a unit, 13 or not, 12, connected with e.

5) The tens and the units are always connected with e

Summary: There is alway an e. The only exceptions are the millions and the thousand and the thousand followed by hundred(s) something. Given that in most cases it is hundred(s) + something in daily live there is no e.

Furthermore some things should be remembered.

1. If the hundred stand alone, it is cem and not cento. (As in Spanish cien <=> ciento.)

2. a multiple of hundred is written in one word

seven = sete cento is written setecentos (seven hundred),
eight = oito cento is written oitocentos (eight hundred) etc..

wherin dois and cinco are irregular. Is is not doiscentos like dois = two, but duzentos and five hundred is not cincocentos like cinco but quinhentos.

3. Um / uma is a cardinal number, one piece of something. However in opposite to English, where the article, a man, has nothing to do with the cardinal number, one man, in Portuguese and many other languages one, um / uma / uns / umas is an indefinitive article as well. If "Um homem cruza a rua", "A man crosses the street" it is actually true, that one single man crosses the street, however this is not the point. The point is, that a man, someone unknown, someone that can be anybody, crosses the street and if "Uns homens cruzam a rua", several unknown men crosses the street. The second point we have to understand is that um complies in gender and number with the noun it refers to. In most languages one complies in gender and number with the noun it refers two.

However in Portuguese there is feminine version as well of dois, duas.
